Throughout this semester, I have discovered the scope of the ever-evolving subject that this course is based on. It has been really interesting to see all the possibilities and venues with which we can communicate. As a whole, I think that this class expanded my knowledge on visual communication. But I think that when paired with an already extremely demanding semester of architectural studio, I wasn’t able to put the amount of focus I would have liked to into it. This class covers a very large basis of material and the projects seemed to go flying by. I enjoyed the diversity of the projects we undertook. It was a nice change of pace from the usual architecture projects I’ve grown accustomed to. Though, I found myself often in a scramble to meet the needs and deadlines of these two classes. I liked the fact that though this was an English class, it was still designed based. I think that aspect really appealed to me and kept me more involved than a standard English class would have.
While creating my portfolio, I really enjoyed being able to go back and look through the work I had done this semester. It was a good experience too to start to put together my work in the digital realm. I think that it reads through pretty well and organizes my work in a coherent manner. Throughout the semester I think I learned a lot more about communicating in different genres. Two projects that highlighted this for me were the photo essay and the video remix. The photo essay changed how I looked at that form of communication. By going through the process of actually creating one, I learned it’s more than just a collection of images. Its power comes in the subject captured, and, while sometimes the images can be captured at random, usually their set up is deliberate. The video remix was another beast altogether. It was something I was completely unfamiliar with and something that though it may seem simple, required a lot of background knowledge.
A few things I revised were the remix and the timeline. I added my artist statement to the remix. Something that I had glossed over originally. I think that that added a lot to my understanding of my own video. It made me think about the work that I had done and forced me to express why I had done it in that particular way. A slight change to the timeline was the plane and banner. David and I thought that it added a nice touch as it is another form of advertisement that we could work into our project.
I think the two things I am most proud of come from my photo essay. I was able to pick a topic, make a shot list, and the go and get the shots I wanted. The ability to visualize the end goal and make it happen is something that I was really pleased with on that project. I was also happy with the way the photography came together as far as quality of imagesOverall, I wish I would have had more time to put into this class and a lot of that comes down to time management. This is something I have always struggled with and it becomes increasingly difficult during semesters like this past one. This is something I want to really work on in the future.
